The Civil War erupted and the US Navy found it’s self sadly short of warships. The Harriet Lane came under order by the US Navy to relieve the garrison of Fort Sumpter in April 1861. While on duty the Harriet Lane was the first naval ship to fire a shot. The steamer Nashville tried to run the blockade, into Charleston Harbor without displaying the national flag. A shot was placed across the Nashville’s bow by the Harriet Lane. The crew of the Nashville quickly hoisted the flag. Thus the “First Shot” had been fired
