POETRY by Lee Teter
Poetry surrounds us.
Poems have flowed from the pens of countless poets – dreamers, lovers, observers and interpreters of the world. Poetry can take any thought, action, event, or person and make an eloquent, graceful statement about it in just a few lines. Other forms of writing require volumes to evoke the insight poetry conveys in mere seconds. People, places and times are often captured on paper in a rhythm where they live forever. Inspiring the poet to write and the reader to read are moments in life we’ve all known. The rhythm of life and its flow is the source of poetry and readers are reminded of the poetry of life when it is interpreted, filtered and reflected as a simple poem.
Art is also a form of poetry. Reflecting, interpreting, focusing and reminding us of the intricate flow of life; stopping time long enough to realize how fantastic a mere moment can be. Horses rustling through grass, gently exhaling and sighing; an afternoon sun shining brightly and warming the skin, farther away than even the imagination can comprehend; a book grasped in the hand, more left to read than has been pondered, the remainder promising many more moments pleasantly spent. These are poetic experiences enriching daily life to be kept as memory; the memory of many senses satisfied.
Everyone may become a poet, as the mind sifts through memories, and in essence, recaptures our beautiful days when youth and life were poetry yet to be captured in art or phrase.
As evening fell
A maiden stood
At the edge of a wood
In her hand lay the reins
Of a stallion
And ne’er I’d seen a girl as fair
Heard a gentler voice anywhere
Whispered alas, she belongs to
Another
She belongs to the twilight
And mist.
