Perhaps no other cavalry best exemplified the French horseman than the Cuirassiers. Their regiments of around 1,000 troopers and considered the best in Europe for the majority of the period proved their worth time and again on the battlefields of Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau, Essling, Borodino and the fields of the 1815 campaign. Armed primarily with a heavy, straight sword, they were big men on big horses and the sight of thousands of them riding boot to boot often inflicted a mental terror of impact on their waiting adversaries.
