Born in Stafford Co., VA, on Feb. 28, 1752. A cousin of George Washington, his 1st combat during the Revolutionary War was the battle of Harlem Heights where he was a company commander of the 3rd VA Regt. . After a successful assault during the Battle of Trenton, where his company seized two cannon, William was promoted to Major in the 4th Light Dragoons. By 1778 he was a Lt. Colonel of the 3rd Light Dragoons.
